American Singles.com and yahoo personals are cool 'cuz if you're a chick they guys (paid members) can email you, but us chicks can read the emails for free!

Are you saying that the rules are different, depending on your gender?

Indeed. In order to get guys to pay for the site, they need to be able to advertise that they have a large quantity of women to choose from, and guys are more likely to pay than women are... it's all about statistics and the bottom line.

No, I believe yahoo personals doesn't do that, but I know that there are several big ones that do. I think the market may be evening out a bit, but in the beginning, most of them would be free to women and charge the men, because men were willing to pay, and women weren't (mainly because women got creeped out when approached by a large majority of the men who were on the personals, I suspect,) and they needed enough of both to have a successful venture.

www.reciprodate.com , last time I checked anyway, was free for all. I've never gotten a reply from any messages I've sent though? Maybe the gals are just to, to busy? That's the only one I've used that's completely free.

Also this site, in a way, I guess.

Wow I tried reciprodate and only got two girls who the site considered local to me, I emailed the first one, she responded, and we are going on a date tomorrow :)

Thanks for the link, hope it works out better for you.

There's a megalomaniac guy trying to start a free love standard called "Socialgrid" (do a Google). I think it's a good idea.

www.okcupid.com is totally free and has really good questions for matching people. There are a lot of people on it, too.

OK - I know that Friendster is the devil but I met my boyfriend on there. We've been dating for almost three months now. I'm totally smitten.

I liked Friendster (and MySpace too) because you can search by gender, by location, by age and relationship status BUT it isn't really a dating site. Tribe doesn't seem to be set up that way.

And the "about me" section on Friendster - since it was not dating-oriented, seemed to tell me more about people than a personal ad does. No "I like walks along the beach..." crap - it was more about them and their interests. Also friend testimonials were pretty entertaining.

That's what I love about Friendster and MySpace. Since there are soooo many people on both, I really need to be able to narrow down the people to a more managable amount.

www.RatePerclick.com is totally free... they're just building up
the database... so your image will get a high hit from everyone.
And i already got a friend and date from someone and that's fast
    considering it is just new.

There's something about that site that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The grammar is horrible and there are typos everywhere in the stuff the webmaster has written. The domain name screams to me that the site is going to be leaving cookies, and my email address is bound to be sold to 50 spammers by tomorrow. It just looks unpolished and skanky.

No thanks - I think I'll pass on this one.
